He's not sure if he can do it in that time or not. He's still got the book but it thus far hadn't been terribly helpful. He wasn't sure if it was supposed to be unclear and make things difficult or not. Every time he opened it, it seemed to only tell him he was 'on the right track' or 'moving in the right direction'. There wasn't much he could do with that...
It's not like he could keep her waiting forever, but he still takes a few moments to think it over, trying not to be distracted by how close she is. When he answers, it's hesitantly. Because he doesn't know what he'd choose to do if he ran out of time...
