It stings for her to pull away from him. Even though he knows it's probably best not to let himself get any closer. Already he was feeling possessive of her when he knew he didn't have any right to be. Maybe distance was best.
He follows her, but at a slightly slower pace so he can hang back some. Give her space. It's tempting to read her emotions. Usually he would do it without a second thought. But he hesitates with her--not wanting to invade on her privacy.
